DES MOINES – Mundo Pequeño Childcare Center, the city’s first Spanish immersion childcare center, will host an open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10.
At a time when many school districts in the Des Moines metro have cut back Spanish programs for elementary students or have discussed ways to add immersion programs, Mundo Pequeño has grown and expanded its programming.
Research has shown those with bilingual skills have improved cognitive skills, can solve mental puzzles more quickly, and the obvious: They can communicate with a broader range of individuals and pay more attention to their surroundings as they switch between languages.
Director Lupita Castillo first began a full immersion Spanish education program in 2007. As demand grew, so did her facility and her employee count as more families saw the benefits of the Spanish Immersion Learning Center. Babies, toddlers and preschool students learn to become native speakers of the Spanish language, as well as English.
Castillo’s new facility, located at 1922 S.W. First St., now has capacity for 59 babies, toddlers and preschoolers. Open house attendees can tour the facility, meet employees and learn about the benefits of the Spanish immersion program.
For more information, contact Castillo at 515-771-5966.
